What Are The Signs Of A Rodent Infestation?

You might have a rodent infestation if you notice the following signs:

Droppings

You might notice small, dark droppings along your baseboards or in your cupboards. Mouse droppings tend to measure about 1/4" long, while rat droppings are a little longer, usually measuring about 3/4" long. If the droppings appear dark and moist, they indicate you have an active infestation on your property.

Footprints

You may notice little tracks or footprints in dusty areas, like windowsills. These might be difficult to spot, but they tend to indicate the presence of rodents. If you're not entirely sure whether there are mice or rats around, leave a little flour in a suspicious area. If you notice tracks the next day, you know you have a rodent problem.

Scratching noises

Rodents come out at night, and this is when you'll most likely hear them. Listen out for squeaks, scratching, gnawing, or scampering while you're relaxing in the evening or lying in bed. If the noises coming from your roof, you may have roof rats - these rodents are difficult to deal with as rooves are generally harder to reach, but identifying them is the first step to removing them from your home.

Damaged wood, plastic or electrical cables

Rodents' teeth keep growing, and they need to chew on hard materials in order to grind them down. What they end up chewing could range from your skirting boards, wooden furniture, or loose items, to your plasticware or electrical wiring. They're also notorious for chewing through walls and creating holes to nest in hard-to-reach areas. If you notice unusual holes at floor level or have detected damage to your furniture, items or wiring, this is a good sign you have an active rodent infestation on your property.

Nests and burrows

If you find a mound of shredded material and droppings nearby, you've most likely found a nest. Rodents will use any soft material - from the fillings of soft toys to shredded towels and paper - to create a soft home for their young.

How To Prevent Rodent Infestations

There are simple steps you can take at home and at work to prevent a rodent infestation:

  • Clean up food: Wash dishes after use, and dispose of any unwanted food scraps immediately in a bin
  • Seal food: Don't leave any food items - for yourself or your pets - out overnight. Seal all food in plastic or metal containers with a tightly-closing lid to ensure no rats or mice can break in unawares
  • Compost: Make sure your compost bin is placed at least 100 feet from your home to deter pests
  • Seal the gaps: Check the interior and exterior of your home, and in your garage or outbuildings, and seal any gaps or holes you might find. These gaps can prove easy entry points for rats and mice

Rodent Pest Control Solutions

If you have a rodent infestation in your home or business, you don't need to get rid of these unwanted visitors all by yourself. Successfully controlling and eliminating a rodent infestation is crucial in maintaining the health and safety of your family, as rodents carry and spread diseases and can also chew through important wiring, which can put your home or property at risk of fire.

The team at All Pest Solutions is on hand to provide safe pest control solutions that will free your home, business or property of pests. Once you contact us, one of our expert technicians will come to you to conduct a free inspection. They'll note the extent of rodent activity on your property, and from this will be able to determine the best products for the job. At the end of the site visit, they will update you on what they've found, discuss the most suitable treatment available, and offer you a quote.

When treating rodent infestations, we most often place rodent bait in your roof cavity, and can also place the bait securely within a tamper-proof, lockable rodent station. During their site inspection, our pest technician will identify the best area to place this treatment - usually in a high-activity area such as a kitchen cupboard.

The lockable rodent stations we use have many fantastic benefits. These include:

  • Size: They hold close to 1kg of bait, so there will be enough there to do the job
  • Flexibility: We can install them indoors or outdoors, depending on where the infestation is on your property
  • Convenient: The lockable station easily fits within corners or along walls, so won't be in the way as you go about your normal day
  • Safe: If you're worried about your pets or children getting into the bait, the tamper-proof design of our lockable stations ensures your peace of mind
  • Easy to clean: With their rounded interior corners, our lockable stations are easy to maintain.
  • Waterproof: If you need to place your bait station in water, rest assured they're designed to survive.

Once the rodents consume the bait, the attractant within the bait causes them to become dehydrated. They will therefore seek out a water source, and in most cases, their place of water is outside your property. Once they start drinking, the poison within the bait becomes active and leads to their death. You therefore won't need to worry about the bait leading to rodents dying on your property, though it is possible that they can perish inside the roof. If this is the case, one of our expert technicians can be on your property to remove it for you in no time. Contact us today to make your rodent infestation a thing of the past.
