Where Are Fleas Found?

The unfortunate reality is that fleas are everywhere! Although some locations are likely to contain higher concentrations of fleas than others, flea eggs, larvae, pupa and adults can be found outside, on public transport, on animals, people, clothing and elsewhere. That said, to become a problem, fleas require specific conditions to survive. The main requirement is a source of nutrition. Fleas drink blood to meet their nutritional requirements - the type of blood required varies, depending on the type of flea. Cat fleas, for example, can only thrive and breed if they have a source of cat blood available. Similarly, dog fleas need access to dog blood to complete their lifecycle.

An infestation is most likely to develop in locations where a rich source of the flea's preferred blood is available. For most domestic homes, this will be in your pet's bed, or in locations where your pet spends a considerable period of time - if your dog sleeps on the couch, for example, or your cat sneaks upstairs to doze on the bed, it's likely that both those places will be flea hot spots in your home.

How To Identify Fleas

The flea goes through four different life stages and looks different at each stage. It's important to be aware of what the flea looks like at each stage, to make it easier to identify signs that you're subject to an infestation:

  • Eggs: Eggs are small, typically about 5mm long and a rounded rectangular shape, like a tiny grain of rice, and white in colour.
  • Flea larvae: Flea larvae look like small worms. They are usually between 1.5 and 5mm long and are translucent.
  • Pupae: Pupae closely resemble adult fleas but are transparent. They gradually darken to the brown/beige colour of an adult flea as they mature.
  • Adult fleas: Adult fleas are about 3mm long and browny red in colour. They have long legs and are capable of jumping up to 200mm or so up in the air.

If you spot any type of insect that resembles these descriptions, we recommend giving us a call so that we can identify the pest and eliminate it.

What Are The Signs Of A Flea Infestation?

Although these signs aren't concrete proof that you are dealing with a flea infestation, if you spot any of the issues detailed below, we suggest you give us a call. Flea infestations are unlikely to resolve on their own, so the sooner a pest problem is dealt with, the easier it is to resolve.

Signs to look out for:

  • Pets are itching or scratching more than usual.
  • Flea bites! Flea bites appear as small bumps on the skin. They may be surrounded by a ring (halo) of discoloured skin. They can appear singly or as a cluster. Note that, although dog and/or cat fleas can bite humans, they won't take up residence. Pet fleas require pet blood, so although they may bite a human, they won't linger once they discover they can't get the nourishment they need. You may also notice that your pet has flea bites.
  • Fleas jumping. It's possible to see fleas jumping on pets, soft furnishings, carpets and anywhere else that they're active. A jumping flea is one of the commonest signs that an infestation is present.
  • Flea eggs. If you shake out your pet's bedding, you may well see flea eggs.

How To Prevent Fleas

  • The commonest flea in Australia is the cat flea, so ensure any cats on your property have been treated for fleas. In addition, there are a variety of safe flea prevention tablets, injections and drops that can be applied regularly to the animal. These create an environment that's hostile to fleas, preventing them from settling. Dog fleas are the second commonest type of flea, so dog owners should also make sure that their pets are up-to-date with their flea prevention treatments.
  • Wash and vacuum pet beds regularly.
  • Keep pets off soft furnishings, beds, couches and other soft surfaces.
  • Maintain high levels of hygiene in the home. Vacuum soft furnishings regularly.

Flea Treatment Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need To Leave The Property Whilst Flea Treatment Is Going On?

This depends on the severity of the infestation and the measures we're taking to eliminate it. If the infestation is widespread, the property may need to be empty for a few hours whilst we treat it. Smaller infestations, or infestations that are confined to a small area, may not require the property to be empty. We will make sure you're fully aware of what's involved in the treatment and do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum.

Can I Catch Fleas From An Infestation?

Not usually. Whilst cat, dog and bird fleas may bite humans, they don't settle. There are human fleas in Australia, but they're rare and it's highly unlikely you'll come into contact with them in everyday life.

How Many Visits Will It Take To De-flea My Property?

This depends on the type of property, the severity of the infestation and how robustly preventative measures are adhered to after the initial visit. In some cases, more than one visit will be required, particularly if pets living on the premises aren't up-to-date with their preventative treatments.
